Stotan!, Chinese Handcuffs, Running Loose, and Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes all involve intense topics that add to the plot. Talk about the point in which you became hooked into your book. What did Chris Crutcher do to hook you? Describe any moment or moments in the book where you didn't want to put the book down. What will you always remember about this book?
I read Chinese handcuffs and I got hooked when Preston killed himself to see what would happen next and what dillion would do about his brothers suicide. I will always remember the flashbacks of Jennifer and what happened to her.
ReplyDeleteIn Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes, we didn't have anyone kill themselves but had an attempted suicide!
DeleteIn stotan, The main characters friend, Nortie's brother also committed suicide years before the story happened. Nortie kept it a secret from his friends but finally told his friends about it. It is sad but i feel like it adds depth to the characters.
DeleteThis book does sound really good! It can connect with Staying Fat For Sarah Byrnes with the death in your book and attempted death/suicide in mine.
DeleteI also got hooked on the part when Jen was trying to kill herself and I couldn't stop reading then.
DeleteI, also, was curious how all would turn out after Preston killed himself. I found it very interesting how Preston said to Dillon before taking his life that he left him a note and a little something else. I was intrigued as to what was the something else until I found out it was Stacy's baby.
DeleteI got hooked into the book at the same time that is really where the story picked and the book actually got interesting. I agree with where you thought it good to.
Deleteemerson lux morales
ReplyDeletethe point where the book got me not want to stop reading the book was when dillion was trying to caught jen's stepdad on camara. it got me hook because well if he gets caught what he was doing he might have been killed by jen's stepdad. i think he did that so that you keep reading since the suspense was big. i think the biggest thing remember about this book is how dillion always help jen and likes a lot and at the end he must kind of let her go because he do not thinks that she will be ready for a relation ship yet.
That's also a point where I couldn't stop reading, I wanted to find out if Dillion was going to catch him or if T.B would find the camera.
DeleteWhen Mr. Byrnes attempts to kill Eric. Chapter 19 was the area where i couldn't stop reading and it was my favorite chapter.
ReplyDeleteI would have to agree, that was a full of action chapter that kept me reading as well!
DeleteI agree! I was hooked on that one as well. loved the action in it.
Deletei agree that was a really good part of the book at the end of that chapter it was hard to stop reading
Deletein running loose nobody attempted to kill anyone it just happened!
Deletethe point that I got hooked in the book is when they were in the office and Eric told Mrs. byrnes that he was not going to say where Sarah was. it was hard to put the book down after Eric was getting attacked by byrnes with a knife after getting chased thought back yards and down streets. one point that I will remember is the ending of the book how carvers beats up Mrs. byrnes.
ReplyDeletei was surprised eric was able to stand up to mr byrnes because he can be very intimidating
DeleteI became hooked to my book when I finally started to understand what was going on in my book. The beginning of my book was very confusing and I couldn't grasp onto what was going on. In the beginning they also introduced a ton of characters which made it confusing to follow along. The last couple chapters of the book were good and had so much going on that kept me wanting to keep going. For example, Sarah leaving the hospital, Eric getting chased by Virgil, Sarah going to Reno to find her mom, and getting adopted at the end, to name a few.
ReplyDeletei was very confused in the beginning because all the characters were just thrown in
Deletethe beginning was kind of hard to follow along with i would a agree with that.
Deletemy book also took a while to get hooked a well!
Deletethe beginning of the book was really confusing with all the flashbacks and moving around talking about other characters as well.
DeleteThe moment i became hooked onto staying fat for Sarah Byrnes was when we found out that Jody actually had an abortion because throughout the book her boyfriend Mark has said how abortion is a horrible thing and it is murder but it turns out that he got Jody pregnant and made her get an abortion by herself.
ReplyDeleteThat does sound like what Chris C. would do in his story having a surprising and unexpected event happen in the story.
DeleteI was hooked on the book when Walker first figured out about stotan week but then, after stotan week, I noticed the book was all over the place and just talked about random stuff and didn't really have a point anymore. It feels like its after the story is over and is just writing about Walker's normal life now. Now I am hooked because feel like something will happen that really ties stotan week into the other events of the story.
ReplyDeleteSounds like Chris likes to do that in a lot of his story's. Might have a confusing start but then hits it with a bang with a unexpected event!
DeleteIn Running Loose the part that keep me the most locked into the story that made me not want to drop the book was when Louie's girlfriend Becky died in a tragic car accident. It was so sudden and out of nowhere it took an unexpected turn. The way Chris would describe the emotions out the characters really hit home and was very emotional and dark. I will always remember the heart this story had and I could relate to some of the events that went down with loss and feeling betrayed so it was a very good and impactful story.
ReplyDeleteI agree that Becky's death was really where the book got interesting. He really did explain how he felt and everything very well.
DeleteI feel like Chris Crutcher really likes to throw in a lot of darker events to really show how dangerous the world really is. In the book i am reading there are instances of abuse and suicide. It really adds a level of realism to the point where I feel like these books are all true stories.
DeleteI agree, Becky's death was very sudden and was not what i expected to happen as i was reading further on in the book.
Deleteyea i hated it on how it happened so early in the book and how, why did it have to Becky?!
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteI am reading running loose and in the beginning the book is really slow. its not until chapter 5 with the big game that the book really gets going and when he is kicked of the team it just keeps getting better. but then when the car accident happens I just wanted to throw the book across the room and never look at it again. so if you really want to know what happens read the book yourself.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the book being slow till chapter 5 and it speeds up a little bit. i also agree its a good book and Becky's death was out of nowhere
DeletePayson Hofstetter
DeleteI thought the book was pretty good in the beginning and it was a little slow but not too much.
Yeah that was a part that kept me reading too but mostly when Becky died. It definitely started a little slow in the beginning but started to pickup.
DeleteIn the book running loose the main character is louis and his girlfriend died. She swerved to miss 2 kids on a motorcycle and went off a cliff into a river. This part of the book really go me interested was how he described what louis did and how he felt after Becky died. I will always remember this book for Becky dyeing and how he had to get his mind off it.
ReplyDeleteI agree that it will be hard to get that off your mind of her death
DeletePayson Hofstetter
DeleteI agree that its hard to get Becky's death out of your mind.
If I was reading that book, the part that would hook me is when the girlfriend gets in the accident and dies for sure!
DeleteI'm reading the book running loose and the part that got me hooked was when louis girlfriend died. She tried to miss the 2 kids on the motorcycle and she went off the cliff and into the river. Louis then talk about what he did to get over Becky death.
ReplyDeletePayson Hofstetter
ReplyDeleteThe part that hooked me in Running Loose was when everything started to get crazy with Boomer and Louie. He hooked me by making it interesting and fun to read. I didn't want to put the book down when Boomer hurt Washington because Louie was upset and was yelling at his coach for being dirty. I will always remember how Louie stood up for someone else and helped him.
I have no idea what I would do if my coach told me to hurt another player.
DeleteThe point in the book where I got hooked was pretty much when Sarah Byrnes started talking again, and we found out how she actually got her burns. Chris Crutcher uses sad topics to hook me. A moment in the book where I did not want to put it down was when Eric was running from Virgil Byrnes and was stabbed in his back. That is the moment I will always remember.
ReplyDeletethat was another good part that stuck out to me, although it was kinda sad, it was brave of her to tell everybody.
DeleteChaoter 16 really made me want to keep reading. Sarahs dad Virgil Burns fianlly goes after Eric. He snuck into Eric's car and held a knife up to his cheek and ends up cutting him on the cheek. And when eric tries to run away Virgil threw the knife and stabs him in the shoulder. Eric runs to Dale's house which actually saves him. which that also surprised me because dale was his middle school bully. i will never forget the part when Eric pushes Virgil to try to defend himself before the attack but ends up just back fires in the end.
ReplyDeleteI would agree at this point I was shocked to finally hear how far Virgil would go to keep his secret
Deleteit was crazy to me that he would do that to eric when it was sarahs dads fault that she ran away from him so she wouldnt have to live with him and have to deal with the abuse again
DeleteThe part that really got me into the book was when I found out Jen is being raped by her dad and then we find out that her step dad is doing it also. But the reason I kept reading is because even though the reader knows about it no one else does. I was waiting for Jen to finally tell someone and she finally did tell Dillion. The moment I didn't want to put the book down is when Jen ran out of the basketball game and Dillion had to chase her and stop her from killing herself. But what I'll always remember is when Dillion finally confronts T.B with the tapes and that he finally has been caught.
ReplyDeleteIt was a great moment when Dillon was able to confront T.B. with a copy of the tape. There was no way T.B. could get away without charges, if Jen chose to charge him for his abuse. I am glad Jen eventually did press charges on T.B. and have him arrested.
DeleteJen needed to tell someone she was hurting on the inside so nobody could tell what she was feeling she was scared to tell because if he found out it would've probably happened again and worse glad he was finally confronted.
DeleteThis book sounds like it has a very interesting plot and some eventful scenes throughout the book. A book like that would be very interesting and I feel that it would have no problem keeping and holding my attention.
DeleteThat is one of the reason I was so into the book as well. I wanted to know what was going to happen and if she was going to tell someone about what her dad was doing to her.
DeleteChris Crutcher hooked me into the book when I read about Jen being abused by her father and later, sadly, by her stepfather. From there, I wanted to see how the story would tie in with Dillon, and also, I wanted to see how Jen would get help with her abusive situation. I didn't want to put the book down in two parts of the book. The first was when Jen ran out of the basketball game to the water tower. The second was when Dillon planted the video camera in Jen's bedroom to have evidence against T.B. What I will always remember about Chinese Handcuffs is how Dillon was willing to risk all for Jen--even if that meant them stealing her mom's baby and running off or having to kill T.B.
ReplyDeletei Agree that the best part of the book was when dillon finally had the evidence it made the end really good. i found her parts of the book to be the most intresting.
DeleteI was hooked at about that point too. I got really into it once Dillon wanted to set up a way to catch him doing it
DeleteA part of the book where I did not want to put my book down was actually the beginning of the book where it said one of the characters parents beats them as a punishment for doing something bad like swearing. I dont remember which character but I didnt want to put my book down because that is how it pulled me into the book by giving me a background to one of the characters.
ReplyDeleteMy book was the same where i couldn't put my book down because it was getting so good at one point.
Deletethis sounds just like my book Staying fat for Sara Byrnse because how her father wasn't stable so he beat his wife and his daughter
DeleteThis situation reminds me of nortie from stotan he could do nothing wrong but his dad would still beat him.
Deletei read CHinese Handcuffs and i agree that i got pulled in at the very beginning too due to background information we got about the characters.
Deletei am reading running loose and the part that got me hooked was when becky died. when i was reading about her dying and how she died i didnt want to stop reading. the way that everyone dealt with the death was a part to remember.
ReplyDeletethis sounds a lot like stotan when Jeff died because I had hard time putting the book down.
DeleteYeah me too it was definitely difficult to put it down after that. Yeah it definitely made the book more interesting
Deletethe book wouldnt have as much of a story without becky in general and than becky is there and gone which makes the story be drug on for much longer, i agree though becky is the part that hooks the reader.
DeleteStaying fat for Sarah Byrnes was a very intense read due to some of the topics and events Crutcher put into his book but what really hooked me was when I learned how Sarah really got burned after that I couldn’t wait to read the next chapter to learn more. One intense moment that made the book irresistible not to read was after Eric got stabbed by Virgil Byrnes
ReplyDeleteagreed when we learned the truth it was a big shocker to the book but it made sense to tell the readers what actually happen to her
Deleteafter finding out what happened to Sarah it was hard to not keep reading to make sure that everything would work out.
DeleteI became most hooked on the book when it started talking about nortie and his girlfriend and how his parents didn't like the fact that she was a different race. the reason why i was most hooked was because i was interested to see how nortie would deal with it. On of the parts that made me not want to put it down was when nortie told everyone that his brother killed himself and that nortie had done some drugs.
ReplyDeletethis is stotan
DeleteIs this stotan?
DeleteI would agree with that it was hard to put the book down during the part when Nortie was confessing about his brother because there was already an interesting part in the book going on because Nortie just returned from work after he hit a child.
DeleteI had a hard time putting the book down when this happened but for me the place where i was most eager to read was when jeff came out that he would die because he was sick, and how all of the guys and jeff's girlfriend reacted
DeleteI agree that I couldn't put the book down as well when Nortie told Walker that his brother killed himself due do his fathers abuse. Its not very often that books make emotional moments like that feel real.
DeleteIt took awhile for me to get hooked in the book because I felt like things in the book repeated its self. What got my attention real fast was when Jeff pasted away. I was not ready for that at all. Another moment in the book was when O'brian makes fun of Nortie and Milika and then the 2 boys begin to fight and Nortie gets hurt. Something that will always make me remember this book is where the swim team cant compete in state because they are to small.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that when Jeff died it was hard not to stop reading.
DeleteI would agree with it being a very hard part in the book to put it down, when Jeff passed away. I also agree with the book being hard to get hooked, because it felt scrambled and hard to follow.
DeleteI agree with your opinion I felt like it was very sad when Jeff passed away it was hard not to keep reading what way going to happen next

ReplyDeleteIn the book Stotan I would say I got hooked to it right before Stotan week was about to begin. I think that Chris Crutcher did a good job doing this by having so much build up to Stotan week. He made it feel like it was a secret by not giving you much info about it until it actually began. And I would say once Stotan week began is when I felt like I couldn't put the book down because I wanted to know about what Stotan week really was.
ReplyDeleteChris Crutcher hooked me when louie went from talking about mostly football in any aspect and comparing things to football to everything being about becky and especially since its the first girl he had ever had a date with and it was his dream girl and than to later find out that she ends up passing away in an accident really gives the story a better plot and i didnt want to put the book down after that because i wanted to see what louie would do now without becky.
ReplyDeleteI thought it was crazy that Chris Crutcher decided to kill Becky because at the beginning of the book he writes about he talked he up like Loui was surprised he would even look at him.
DeleteI am reading Running Loose and the part that pulled me in was when I read the introduction to the book and it talked about the small town life. I really enjoy reading books about small towns like #pworth and how they r similar. One thing that I thought was hilariously similar is the wise old man that is always at the bar and seems to know every thing. He reminds me of the people that come into Silkers every morning to have a cup of coffee and talk about what is going on.
ReplyDeletei can relate to the small town life as well growing up in colesburg and you would see the same 4 old guys drinking coffee and playing cards every morning in the gas station
DeleteI relate because I used to work at a gas station in Edgewood and I would always see the same five guys come in for coffee and snacks.
DeleteI also get hooked on books that take place in small towns because they are so relatable to my life...at least the living situations of a small community where everybody knows everybody.
DeleteThe part that I started getting hooked was when Becky died and it was listing all the emotion Louie was feeling and what he wanted to do. It was showing how much he missed her. Another part that got me hooked was when Madison asked Louie to be on the track team, when they were trying to convince lednecky and jasper. It was pretty hard to put the book down after these things just because of how the book started getting
ReplyDeleteI'd agree on how Madison and Louie got into that fight and also how they actually let him be on the team!
DeleteI also had a moment in my book Stotan where it showed true emotion and genuine feelings towards others that got me hooked as well.
DeleteI also had a moment in my book Stotan where it showed true emotion and genuine feelings towards others that got me hooked as well.
DeleteI think it is a good thing that they let him be on the track team, and I think that the rules and restrictions that he had to follow in order to be on the team, were fair as well.
DeleteI read the book Running Loose, and it was so surprising to me when Becky died! like, Louie and Becky were a cute couple together and they had lots of fun together and then it just hit him like that when he got a call from his parents that she drove off a bridge! I could not imagine what Louie could be going through when that happened! and another part was when Louie and Washington went to a track meet at Salmon River at the 2 mile run and when it got to the last second of the race and how he got first just by a hair! I will always remember what happened that day and know that Louie will always be there for ya.
ReplyDeleteI did not expect Becky to die as well. It would be very hard to lose someone that you love, but I think Louie did a good job to try to cope with it by doing track.
DeleteThe moment I had got hooked was when we had learned Jeff was ill and was going to die, because it pushed the rest of the guys to try their hardest while helping each other. I will never forget the moment when all the guys meet at jeff's house and learn about how he is sick and won't make it long.
ReplyDeleteI as hooked on the book from the beginning because i knew that dillons brother preston had killed himself. we got to see the effect it had on dillon and what he did with it. i was un able to put the book down when we got to jens part because you see how strong she was.
ReplyDeleteThat was another really huge turning point in the book. I could see how wanting to know how that plays out can be a hooking point.
DeleteI read Chinese handcuffs and the point that got me hooked was when Dillon wanted to catch Jen's dad. I really couldn't put it down after that because he needed to be caught.
ReplyDeleteI agree everything going on in that family was just wrong and someone needed to figure him out!
DeleteSomething similar happens in Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes, Sarah goes to look for her mom in Reno.
DeleteI feel Dillon took a big chance when he set up the camera to catch T.B. especially with going behind Jen's back kind of but he did what he though was the only way to get rid of T.B. and he did a good job of getting rid of him.
DeleteChris got me really hooked when sarah talked for the first time. He got me by having sarah not talking at all and then all of a sudden she says something out of the blue thats what really got me more into the book and wanting to read it even more then normal. I will remember that this can actually happen in real life and not to judge people before you know there story.
ReplyDeleteThe moment I was hooked while reading Stotan was when stotan week began. I showed true hard work and determination that student athletes go through and doesn’t sugar coat the truth. A moment when I couldn’t put the book down is after Nortie’s incident at the childcare center because it showed true friendship. I will never forget how genuine and real the moment felt when Nortie was in full melt down mood and how Walker handled it perfectly. I also will never forget that because it showed a glimpse of mental health and how important it is to have "your person" to go to in those times.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with your outlook on this part with Norrite at the daycare and I do like how it showed a glimpse of what mental health might look like for some people.
DeleteI became hooked when we finally started talking about his brothers suicide we started with that but then never finished it. Chris did a good job at hooking me right away then he lost me for a little bit the booked skipped around a lot after the start. Jens basketball game I did not wanna put the book down it was the 2 best teams with the 2 best girls going head to head and I wanted to read about the outcome of the game. I don't think I will ever get out of my mind how they killed the cat in the beginning of the book.
ReplyDeleteI forgot about the cat part but it was pretty messed up and I can see how somebody wouldn't forget that.
DeleteThe cat part was a very good hook and Chris Crutcher did very good on that part
DeleteFor my during reading Chinese Handcuffs I became hooked about halfway through the book I am not sure exactly where but it was somewhere in the middle. I believe Chris Crutcher used the fact of making the characters lives so in depth and making us know every little thing about them to get us drawn in more than just reading the book and knowing a few details about the characters. One of the points that I didn't want to put down the book was when Dillon was chasing after Jen when she was trying to commit suicide. This part made you feel like you were there and it was so descriptive of how the burning sensation of Dillion's sprained ankle or his throbbing head I could just really picture it all in my head. One of the things I will always remember about this book will be no matter how strong people look or how well together their lives look you never know what they are going through.
ReplyDeleteThe book is really good with all the details in the story.
DeleteYou seem to have put a lot of effort into your response and helped me understand more as someone who has never read this book.
DeleteI really got hooked when Sarah was brought into the story as the girl in the hospital. I was hooked because I wanted to know what was wrong with Sarah. The part when Eric was running from Sarah's dad will stay in my head for awhile. That was lowkey messed up.
ReplyDeleteI really got hooked in Running Loose when the plot started to become relatable as a high school student. I really started paying attention wen we started getting involved with Louie's football because sports have always spiked my interest. I didnt want to put the book down when Washington got hit by Boomer and wen Sarah died because they are such important parts in the story.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteI got hooked on the book Chinese Handcuffs when it got to point when you started learning about Dillion and Jen story's and more about them and there past. When it talked about Dillion and the day that Preston killed himself. And when it talked about Jens grandpa, and when we started to learn about what her dad did. From there I was hooked on the book and couldn't put it down until I finished it.
ReplyDeletePrestons death was a really good hook
DeleteThose parts where interesting and sad, both hooked me too.
DeleteThat seems like a very interesting book and seems to add a lot of background to the main characters.
DeleteI got hooked on Chinese handcuffs when Dillon starts talking about his past with his brother and what they all did as kids. It was just interesting to me how he flashed back on this after Preston's death
ReplyDeleteAll that information was interesting and shocking to read.
DeleteIn the book Running Loose, the part that got me hooked the most was when Becky died. In that time, everything seemed more intense, and it was easier to follow. It gave the story a great plot twist that I did not see coming. From then on, I could not stop reading. I also found the way that Louie coped with the loss of his girlfriend interesting too. He was able to do track in order to take his mind off of it.
ReplyDeleteIn the book Staying fat for Sarah byrnes, the part that got me hooked when they started looking into why or how Sarah would of burnt her own face it just didn't make any sense. then finding out later that is wasn't her and there was reasons why she never got it fixed.
ReplyDeleteIn Chinese Handcuffs, I became hooked when we learned about Jens past and more so when Dillion found out about the situation. I wanted to know how hed react what what he would do with that information.
ReplyDeletei got hooked after stotn week ended thats where stuff started to happen and actually got interesting
ReplyDeleteIn the book stotan I wasn't too interested at first but then I felt like it went up from there, when I hear about stotan week and that they signed up for it i was very excited to see how that week was going to play out i feel like a lot of high schoolers could connect to this and being excited to go to state for their favorite sport etc.
ReplyDeleteIn the book them moment that hooked me and wouldn't let go of me is when Becky died and everyone was going through so many emotions. It made me as a person very emotional and actually made me cry seeing how everyone was responding to her death.
ReplyDelete
