Imagery is key to capturing the reader's imagination and taking him/her on the adventure within the book. All 4 authors use several different techniques to paint a picture in your mind of the scenes within the plot of the book. Share two or three images that have been captured in your mind through the author's word choice. Why are these images so vivid, and how did the author manage to accomplish this task? Be sure to include specific details of what you envisioned through the author's words.

In the book night some pictures that came to my mind was how they were ran out of the ghettos and loaded up on trains and trucks tightly packed together to be hauled out to the work camps. this comes into my head when i think about how families are separated from their families and forces to work not knowing what will ever happen to them.
ReplyDeleteI can also see them running to get on the train and the guards shooting the Jews that are in the back of the pack and the crowded train cars.
DeleteWhen he was taking about just getting there, I feel like I was there, they were scared and being separated and forced to go towards and incinerator.
DeleteI could also see were the scene is being set because of my knowledge of the holocaust
DeleteFor this part, I imagine everything was just a blur for them. Constantly moved and then them getting packed into train cars. everything was just a blur.
DeleteIn the book i am Malala she describes when the Taliban starts coming into Swat and how they cut off innocent people heads and showing it to the public. The way she just describes everything i can just see it in my head. Another one is the floods that can in, i can just see the rushing water and the many screams from people.
ReplyDeleteone can easily visualize people heads off if you see movies that are related to what you just read about.
DeleteI agree with this, it really isnt hard to picture
DeleteI agree, I could picture these events very clearly in my head too, really a sad time for them.
Deletewell the book i am malala talked about a mountian that was high where they live. she sad that it was high and that it touch far in the sky and how the clouds kind of sorrounded it so i kind of picture the mountain touching the clouds and the clouds sorroundid it and making a cirlce around the top. another pictue i visualize was when she said that the road were blocked by tree so it came in mind a movie a saw where the roads were blocked by trees and when she discribe it i visualize perfectly.
ReplyDeleteI agree especially in this book Malala really gives the reader a very good visual of what is going on in her live.
DeleteIn the book night a picture that comes into my head is when they were in the ghettos before they went to the concentration camp in the house that Elie explained and when they were getting ready to go to the camp. And having having goods in the back yard and the fence that surrounds the ghettos.
ReplyDeleteThat is something that I image after reading that part is they had no idea what was going to happen to them. They had no idea what they were about to see.
DeleteYah this is something I can image good too. everyone rushing to get their things ready and just being a mess around them.
Deletei suppose it is easy to visualize that
ReplyDeletethe scene in I Am Malala where it talks about the suicide bomber blowing up a school i can imagine them in the house calling each others names to make sure they are safe because they heard a loud BOOM! and the part where it describes swat valley and the queen visiting painted a image because the way she describes it make a visual sensory key of water falls and green grass and people being happy and cheery when they are there.
ReplyDeletewow. I can see that the first one seems very painful to picture, and the second one seems like it would be nice and calming to visualize in your head.
DeleteThe first image that stays in my mind is toward the start of the book where they talked about seeing babies being thrown into the air and being shot with machine guns. That is just something that has stuck with me throughout the book. The Next image that has stuck with me is when they got to the first camp, when Elie was separated from his mom and sister and he didn't know that it was his last time seeing them ever, and he didn't get say good bye and that was it. Those have just stuck with me through the whole because I just couldn't image seeing that and having that happen to me and how I would live with that while only being 15 years old.
ReplyDeletei agree with Logan because they were the hardest parts to imagine and that stuck with me throughout the book and i just cant imagine being in his situation
Deletei would agree that the images stay in your head as you read
DeleteI have the exact same images stuck in my mind no matter how hard I try to forget it stays there.
DeleteI feel like the throwing babies is really sticking with people because you would never imagine doing that to another human being.
DeleteThat image would've stuck with me also if I was reading this book. Seeing babies getting thrown in the air and then shot by machine guns sounds awful!
DeleteThe throwing the babies in the air part stuck with me to, as i bet it did everyone.
DeleteI can relate to this as many tragic things happened in my book as well and some of the things were hard to picture.
Deletei would have to say everything that did happen in the book was terrible but this was by far the worst.
Deletein the book night, when he doesnt get much food thats a vivid image because i've seen how small and fragile the jews got in the holocaust. When they are forced to eat snow off each others backs, i can see that because of how scary and desperate they are. And when he gets seperated from his mother and never seeing her again, that's vivid to me because i could imagine me getting seperated my mo and getting really sad
ReplyDeletei would agree when they talk about the little food they you see the little kid
Deletei agree that i can imagine seeing that too with them being in that train and just being in the camps and working with barely any food or water and they are forced to eat the snow for water.
DeleteI couldn't even think about having to do all the work they ha to do and getting that little food. I don't think that I would've been able to do all the work and have some bread and soup and not a lot of it.
Deletei can also see an image of them being packed into trains
DeleteYour book seems interesting, I would be miserable if I got separated from my mom and not being able to see her again!
Deleteits hard to imagine what they go threw and feel every day
DeleteI can relate that to my book as the main character had little to no food as well
Deletethe book night has a lot of picture that it can put in your head like the one that stayed in my head the longest was the baby's getting put in the fire. another one that stays in your head is when they were in the train trailer when they talked about it you could see it in your head. along with in the ghetto's you can get the images of thee small roomed houses in your head
ReplyDeletei also am reading night and the babys getting thrown into a fire was messed up
Deletei agree this was terrible, my heart shattered
Deletea thousand spledid suns, this reminds me of how vivid the scene was when nana had hung herself from the willow and when the chauffeur tried turning marium around she still saw nana in the swaying willow branches.
DeleteI agree I cant believe a human could do such a thing
Deletein the book kite runner, Amir meets Baba in America tearing apart a gas station and raging about not having a credit card to pay and that back home, they really didn't need a card to pay because they (Afghans) didn't have that kind of technology. Another scene I could picture in my head was when Amir met Soraya, she was a Swap meet Princess. Amir talked about her heels white against the asphalt, silver bracelets jingling around her slender wrists, and the shadow of her hair, casting against the ground when it slid off her back and hung down like a Velvet Curtain. that pictured in my head very well! another scene i thought of is when Amir graduated from high school and him telling us what was all happening, and talking about that flashing cameras, and the people laughing and having a good time, and seeing and hearing the girls hugging and crying and seeing the boys high-fiving their fathers, and then seeing Baba, standing their all alone, smiling at Amir and waiting for him to be near him as they left.
ReplyDeleteThe imagery was very easy to imagine when Amir saw Soraya for the first time. The reader could definitely picture how amazingly beautiful she was and how Amir was beginning to fall in love with her. The author also did a great job of showing imagery whenever Amir chose to talk with or seek approval from his father, as Baba's eyes were dark, piercing, and intimidating.
DeleteAmir's description of his swap meet princes goes into a lot of detail that made a clear picture of what he seeing
DeleteKhaled uses a lot description in his book but the two that stood was when Amir describes his house "the house was well built and beautiful. The house had marble floors, a crystal chandelier hung from the ceiling and Gold-stitched draperies lined up the walls." this gave me a image of this grand house that Amir was born in. another would have to be when he described the panic that he went through while inside the tanker they when fleeing the country. "you open your mouth. open it so wide your jaw creaks. you order your lungs to draw air, NOW, you need air, need it NOW. but your airways ignore you you. they collapse, tighten, squeeze, and suddenly you're breathing through a drinking straw" this helped me see how hard it was to sit in the dark and not having enough air.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you about how when Amir and Baba are in the fuel tanker and the panic the author portrays in his writing at that moment of the novel. I felt panicked, too! The author also did an amazing job with imagery when Amir graduated high school and how Baba wore his brown suit, which was worn for only special occasions. Sadly, the last time I remember Baba wearing the suit was when Amir got married and Baba was dying of cancer, so the suit just hung on him.
Deletein my head I would picture I big house up on a hill like in the movies!
Deletethis remindeds me of wealthy Jalils house in a thousand splendid suns.
DeleteOne image that sticks in my mind is when they first get to the camp and they see the chimneys with the smoke coming out not knowing what it is, and also when the babies where being thrown in the air and then shot that was stuck in my mind and probably will be for a long time.
ReplyDeletei could also see the chimneys
DeleteI couldn't imagine seeing that our book doesn't really focus on the killings more of just the story of a boy
DeleteWhile reading Night i had a vivid image of people being tortured like when the main character is laying on a crate being whipped and i have an image of him blacking out and waking up every time he got hit. I also have an image in my mind of when it talks about the Germans using babies as target practice and throwing them up in the air and shooting them
ReplyDeleteYeah i agree the throwing babies thing was messed up.
Deleteyeah i agree with your picture, throwing the babies made my heart shatter.
Deletei still cant understand how anyone in their right min could shoot dead babies or any child for that matter.
DeleteIts amazing the things other people will do for no reason disgusting!
DeleteOne image this book put in my head is when they were walking the snow I pictured a vast, dark field of snow as all the prisoners walked along in unbearable pain and the guards walking with them. Another scene That stuck in my head was when the guards would throw babies in the air and shoot them.
ReplyDeletethat is one of the most disturbing things I have heard I am glad I didn't get Night.
DeleteThis book seems very harsh! My book can kind of connect!
DeleteIn a thousand splendid suns Mariam and Rasheed where talking about what they should name their baby, and i could visualize them being in the nursery. The author also talked about how Rasheed made Mariam go to the "bathhouse" he described it with steam, dirty water and the soap.
ReplyDeletein the book night i picture all these families hauled up in ghettos and trains and are treated like cattle. they are all split up which makes it even worse and scarier. then being whipped and treated terrible.
ReplyDeleteI would not like it if i were split up with my family. This book sounds really interesting.
DeleteIn I am Malala i visually saw how malala saw the little kids by the pile of trash. It was a mountain of trash and the kids hair was all ratted and clothes were ripped and filthy. I havent envisioned any other thing yet, the book jumps around a bit so it gets kind of hard to picture.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the book jumps around a lot but I feel that the author makes up for that by using such great detail.
DeleteIn the book, The Kite Runner, the author expresses how Amir's wife is unable to have a child. Amir feels the barrenness even when they lie in bed next to each other. The author persuades the reader to feel that Soraya's barrenness takes on a lifelike quality and causes a rift between husband and wife. This imagery, along with Amir's time in the fuel tanker stand out the most in my mind. Amir struggles to breathe and not panic while travelling within the tanker to escape Afghanistan and move on to the United States. Amazingly, Baba must have sensed his panic and coaxed Amir to think happy thoughts to cope with his panic and anxiety. The author used strong word choice to help the reader feel the same panic as Amir did in that moment. I know I sure felt panicked in that moment, as well.
ReplyDeleteIn the book A Thousand Splendid Suns Mariam is unable to have a child as well and the author expresses the same feelings and emotions in my book
DeleteIn I am Malala, the author is always painting pictures in my head as I am reading. The first scene being when the earthquake hit while Malala was in school. She talked about how the desks where shaking while she was in class. There was a ton of damage, deaths, and injuries. I couldn’t imagine being in school when a earthquake hits! Another image is the swat valley that Malala and her family lived in. The valley is surrounded by mountains, full of trees, and rivers flowing through. Malala also talks about the skiers on the mountains in the winter. The valley seems like a peaceful place to live!
ReplyDeleteI also agree, I think Malala's house would be a peaceful place to live.
DeleteI agree that I couldn't imagine being in school during an earthquake.
DeleteIn Night, There are times where I can picture scenes in my head. one scene that really stuck out was when he was describing the soldiers throwing infants in the air and shooting them as if they are target practice. Another scene is when they are all packed together in the train, no where to move and no room to even sit down, just all crammed together. these are all good pictures he paints in your head.
ReplyDeletethat is kind of the same when the rebels kill babies and childern
DeleteI feel everyone that read Night remembers how the Germans used babies for target practice.
Deletethats like in the book im reading rasheed is being very mean to mariam about her having alot of miss carages
DeleteI agree that it was good description in the train and really made us feel how packed full it was.
Deleteyeah all of the people crammed together was something that stuck with me 100 people in one little space

In along way gone Ishmael Beah does a great job of using imagery. the first scene i can picture is when his friend Saidu died, u could feel Ishmaels pain when you read it none of the boys could believe that he was gone they shook him and told him to wake up because they refused to believe he passed. It was hard for Ishmael to leave him behind and he was very conflicted on how his burial was done as it was just the boys there to attend none of his loved ones. Another scene that i remember well was his trip to New York Ishmael was very curious the whole trip and had a very interesting view of New York as he never seen so many white people, tall buildings, and the Cold he never experienced anything like it. I think Ishmael did this so well by using so much detail in his book he was not afraid to talk about all the bad things he saw.
ReplyDeleteYou can tell that he cared for Saidu died, you could see the pain.
DeleteI agree that he does really good job getting you to imagine it.
DeletePayson Hofstetter
DeleteI agree that I could imagine Saide's death because of all the details Ishmael put in.
in the book thousand splended suns i could vividly see raheed beating marian when they kept loosing their babies. i could see this so clear because the author used very detailed words when explaining how he was doing it. The author clearly explained how she felt and the setting that they were in to make the reader connect to the sitution as much as possble!
ReplyDeletei think that he blams her when she cant control anything that happens to the baby shes caring and i do agre that the auther used very good detail
DeleteI agree with this too, I think he described everything very well.
DeleteThat sounds like such a sad and terrible scene to read! It is sad that they lost so many babies though.
DeleteIn a thousand splendid suns I can imagine both mariums and nanas kolba and jalils house, the kolba was a small man made shack like structure that was surrounded by the rolling mountains and hills between Gul Daman and Herat within a grove of willow trees and stream running across the path that leads to the kolba where marium plays her stone game. Jalils house on the other hand is described as fortress like and in the middle of Herat, it has its own large gate too close of the garden that i see as almost a courtyard, on the front side of that gate is a blue mercedes and the house surrounds the garden with giant glass windows multiple bed rooms and red carpet in the halls.
ReplyDeleteIn the book night the image that I remember is when Eli started to get separated from his family. He described it was silent, the only thing you heard was the fire coming from the smoke stack, or the few words spoke to you separating males and females. Then the smell of burning flesh in the air. The author clearly explained this part, this is the part where I really wanted to keep reading and find out what happens.
ReplyDeleteMy book can relate to night because in my book Ishmael gets his mother and father taken away.
DeleteI am reading A Long Way Gone and the author is really good at creating pictures in your head. One example of the pictures that he creates is when the village they are staying in gets raided by rebels. They people of the village go to hide and the priest is killed for not telling where they are. They kill the priest buy burning him to death and it described how the dogs were eating him or what as left. Also in another part they describe how big of a struggle getting food was and what his stomach looked like.
ReplyDeleteIt is a very gory book that goes in depth with describing what is happening in the book which makes you feel bad for what these people had to go through.
DeleteA long way gone with ishmael beah i think the book is great he does a great job writing the book so you can imagine everything in great detail. One of the scenes that i remeber was the first time he went to war and josiah died he explained it very well when josiah got blown up by an rpg explosian. the second scene was when the ishmael was leading a sqaud and his best friend went into the village like rambo and killing people silently.
ReplyDeletePayson Hofstetter
DeleteI agree that he describes the RPG explosion very well and how it was very gory.
the rpg explosion had great detail had lots of gore he dose a great job explaining detail like that.
DeleteIn the book Night one of the first things that comes to my mind is the Germans throwing babies in the air and shooting them with machine guns.
ReplyDeleteI sadly remember this by the fact of my thought process being i can't believe someone would willing throw around and shoot dead babies. Another image i remeber very well is when he described the creamatorium. He use stuff the huge flames turned everything into ash and that he would more than likely one day be turned to ashes by the creamatorium..
I agree that the crematory was very descriptive.
Deletein the novel A Thousand Splendid Suns something that i remember is when mariam was forced to chew on rocks even though the focus has been shifted thats still something i can picture in my head. another thing i can picture is Tariq he is described from lailas point of veiw and as she grows the perspective swithces but i can still get see what hes supposed to look like because she discribes him in good detail.
ReplyDeleteI agree. That image will always be in my mind. The way she described what it was like when he made her chew pebbles was extremely descriptive.
DeleteOur books are king of similar in that people are being forced to do things that they do not want to do. In A Long Way Gone, Ishmael and his friends had to laugh at a man being beaten, just like Mariam was forced to chew rocks.
DeletePayson Hofstetter
ReplyDeleteA long way gone has a bunch of imagery but mostly gory. One of the scenes is how one of his friends died. He describe what he looked like dead and told how he looks like he lost his soul. Another part of the book he described how gory the RPG explosion was and how the body parts flew everywhere. The last part he explained how the sand was like glass shards and cut his feet up. In all of these scenes I could imagine how painful or scary it has been for him though out the book.
It is very gory and I can really see the images that the author describes in the book.
DeleteI agree that it is gory, and I also think that it is quite brutal as well. It does a very good job showing what it was like back then.
DeleteIn Along Way Gone Ishmael and his friends get captured and interrogated by the rebels. It is a very intense moment the author describes in the book that keep me on edge reading it because of how intense of a situation they were in knowing they could possible die. Another moment that got me in the book is when the author describes when the rebels had burned down a village with everyone in it. It felt like a moment of loss and sadness.
ReplyDeleteIn kite runner they had a kite flying fight and it was intense and it was really easy to picture that moment.
DeleteIt sounds like this book is full of excitement and suspense and it would be pretty sad to hear about a village being burned and raided.
Deletein thousand splendid suns i feel like the author did the same thing in the last book we read it seemed confusing but has gotten me hook with how the characters feel and whats happening around them when reading this book. One part that rally got me was when marliams mother hung herself and marliam has to deal with most of it herself. the second part is when marliam is worried that rasheed is going to be rude and very mean. then mariam started to relize this and became very quiet
ReplyDeleteI agree in the sense that they do a good job portraying emotions. It's really easy to see things from Mariam's point of view.
DeleteIn a Thousand Splendid Suns, The description of places as told by Mariam makes it super easy to get an understanding of what she is seeing and feeling. Once part I remember was the part when she got on a bus to go live with her new husband. She made it seem almost grim, but also showed how everyone outside was celebrating and being happy.
ReplyDeleteI am not sure why I cant picture these images so well but I can picture there beautiful house in afghanistan and I can picture the orphanage his father built. And I can just picture afgan where they live it would be nothing like our home but still a beautiful place.
ReplyDeleteI was really hard for me to imagine the houses as well
DeleteIn the book A Long Way Gone, there are a lot of parts that had imagery. When they walked through the villages that were raided and attacked, he talks about how the dead bodies looked, and he talks about how it was like nothing he had seen before. Another time that there was really good imagery was when they were beating and torturing the man in front of everyone and they made the boys laugh at it. The author creates very good images by his descriptions and word choice.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like an exciting book and it also sounds like that he uses alot of good detail that makes the book more interesting.
DeleteI read the book Night and 2 major signs of imagery were the crematorium and him getting whipped. They described the crematory very well by saying there were flames and shooting out the top. They also described him getting whipped very good because he described the feeling and said it only hurt for the first couple hits.
ReplyDeleteI'm reading a long way gone and Ishmeal Beah paints some really grotesque scenes. in one there is a guy lying on the ground with the top of his skull broken open, and he was still alive and the brain was pulsating. in another scene where he was captured by rebels as they were being lined up and old man was captured as well. the rebels made fun of him and eventually made him loose his hearing by shooting a gun point blank next to his ear. And the scene that stuck deepest was when the he reached a village after his was attacked. several others had made it but not without some casualties a mother that had carried her daughter on her back came into town. as she had ran away with her daughter rebels had shoot at her. she had come out unharmed but her daughter had been shoot in the head and died. these are just a few of the scenes that Ishmeal describes and I'm sure that there will be plenty more.
ReplyDeletethis book has a lot of detail in it where there is dead bodies and blood and gore involved
DeleteI am reading Kite Runner and there is many uses of imagery in this book. A few things that really stood out to me were how well I was able to imagine how Baba looked (Amir's father). I was also able to picture the massive household Amir and Baba call home, with marble counter tops and chandeliers hanging in all the major rooms. I can picture the 3 scars that run down Baba's back from when he wrestled the bear and I can see a tall, broad shouldered man with a stockier build.
ReplyDeleteHe did very well at describing baba and the house
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteI am reading kite runner and throughout this book they used a lot of vivid imagery but two things that really stuck out to me was the tree where Amir played and how they sat in the tree and ate the fruit. Another part that was really vivid was the kite tournament and all the colors and people watching.
ReplyDeleteSame here I gathered a lot from there culture by reading about the kite tournaments and how they can make anything entertaining.
DeleteI'm reading the book night and I can picture them when they are in the camp and at some point of the book I cant picture them
ReplyDeleteIn I am Malala the author uses specific detail about everything that's happening in the book so its very easy to picture it. in chapters 6 a vision I got in my head was when Malala found a mother and daughter covered in sores and dirt while she was taking out the trash, I thought this was very sad and I could totally vision it, but I could just imagine the smile on their faces when Malala and her father ended up helping them. my second one would be when she was in school while the earthquake was happening, the desks were shaking, there was a lot of deaths and injuries from this event Malala stated.
ReplyDeleteI love when authors do this they give you amazing details to use in your head and makes the book a better read as well.
DeleteI talked about the mother and daughter scene too. It was very sad!
Deletethe image i have of the prisoners is that they are frail and almost skeletons and the camps they are cramped and have no room and all the dead body's just thrown everywhere is just surreal these images made me feel bad for the characters and all of the people in the holocausts
ReplyDeletejack recker
In the book a thousand splendid suns I could imagine Rasheed beating Mariam and could just visual what he was doing. The author was pretty detailed on that part. The author explains everything very well even when it came to Mariam losing her kid.
ReplyDeletein the book Kite runner many images are painted in my head one is of the soviets' tanks raiding the afghan villages and killing there people. The next is of Ahmir and baba fleeing to America and how they barely take anything with them in the mist of the panic. The next one was the stand off between ahmir and assef as his friends holds the slingshot to his head right before they are about to fight.
ReplyDeletein the book there is a lot of imagery the author dose a good job helping you see it like a picture. In one scene there're is a guy laying on the ground with the top of his skull broken open, and he was still alive and the brain was pulsating. And another one is when Ishmael thought he would finally meet his family he was walking toward the village but he hears gun shots and see the thick smoke then he hears the screams and cries. the way this scene was described and the words he used to describe it its like you can feel what Ishmael is going through. there is lots of scenes like this the author dose a good job making you see what is happening.
ReplyDeleteIn I Am Malala the first scene that I can paint a picture in my mind is when Malala and her family were forced out of Swat they were cramped in a car because that was there only way out. I can paint this in my head because I have been cramped in a car as weell, I can see them pushed together almost sitting on top of each other, sweating and your bags under your feet. The second scene that I can paint a picture in my head is when Malala was in the hospital after getting surgery. I envision Malala laying in a hospital bed surrounded by her parents and doctors all watching her like hawk. I say this because the author had such good details that I felt as if I was standing in the room.
ReplyDeleteIn the book ‘I Am Malala’, you imagine so many horrible things. For example, a woman and her son living on a pile of literal garbage. Another example is when she would talk about people just getting beaten so terribly in the middle of the street for no reason at all, just because the Taliban wanted to. An example that wasn’t bad was when she would describe what her school looks like. It was like you were there standing right next to her. I think the author did this on purpose to make the book more enjoyable, and she does this by using very descriptive words.
ReplyDeleteI am Malala. There is a lot of bad things that have happened in the book. When Malala is at the hospital and she talks about what she looks like, "my left eye bulges, half my hair was gone and my mouth tilted from one side to the other". This shows how bad of shape she was in. Another vivid picture that is painted in my head is when her parents cant go to the last hospital and they are scared because they cant see their daughter.
ReplyDelete
